Courtyard arcades in the houses we build end up furnished with whatever the client finds, usually steel and usually wrong against brick. We drew a bench that could sit under an arcade for thirty years and be repaired rather than replaced. It is solid walnut, no veneer, no metal frame, and no fixing that shows on any surface a hand can reach.
The legs are wedged through-tenons, drawn at 1:5 and cut by a joiner in Tehran who works without a CNC. Bronze dowels pin the seat boards and can be driven out for repair. The top is left slightly proud of the frame so rain runs off the end grain. Two lengths are made, at 1,600 and 2,400 millimetres, sized to the bays we build.
